Aggressiveness and submissiveness in spotted hyaenas: one trait or two?

چکیده
Aggressive and submissive behaviours are commonly assumed to represent two extremes of a single personality trait, often labelled ‘aggressiveness’. However, most studies focus exclusively on behaviour elicited by conspecific aggression, rates at which aggressive expressed, without considering either unprovoked behaviour, or the intensity actions themselves. Utilizing long-term data set spanning 27 years dyadic agonistic interactions among spotted hyaenas, Crocuta crocuta , including counts intensities all acts we assessed consistency within individuals in these behaviours. We found that both aggression submission performed adult female hyaenas varied with context, neither measure was consistent over time were strongly affected social rank, suggesting rate measures traits. Although rank influenced acts, did not vary rank. Intensities also but individual females regardless age, may no significant correlation between lifetime averages supporting hypothesis different traits rather than opposite ends spectrum. Lifetime uncorrelated fitness, analysis average suggests reproductive success be lower spectrum behavioural its centre after controlling for action stabilizing selection. • Hyaenas showed Aggressive/submissive correlated individuals. Individual fitness loosely such acts. Rank significantly frequency expressed. showing very high low had offspring survival.

Sibling competition and hunger increase allostatic load in spotted hyaenas.
Allostatis is the process of maintaining homeostatis through behavioural or physiological responses to challenges, and its cumulative energetic cost is termed allostatic load. The allostatic load hypothesis predicts that hunger and the mechanisms that establish and maintain social dominance should have a strong impact on allostatic load. In spotted hyaenas, dominance between twin siblings emerg...
متن کاملFaecal androgen concentrations in adult male spotted hyaenas, Crocuta crocuta, reflect interactions with socially dominant females
Androgens influence many physiological processes in male vertebrates and have been linked to variation in aggression and reproductive behaviour in many species. This study examined relations between social behaviour and androgens excreted by adult male spotted hyaenas. In this species, males rarely direct reproductive aggression towards other males, but they actively court females that are soci...

متن کاملLong-distance communication facilitates cooperation among wild spotted hyaenas, Crocuta crocuta.
Calls that catalyse group defence, as in the mobbing of predators, appear to facilitate cooperation by recruiting receivers to act collectively. However, even when such signals reliably precede cooperative behaviour, the extent to which the calls function as recruitment signals is unclear. Calls might simply arouse listeners' attention, setting off a cascade of independent responses to the thre...
متن کاملOne lump or two?
We investigate methods for modelling metabolism within populations of cells. Typically one represents the interaction of a cloned population of cells with their environment as though it were one large cell. The question is as to whether any dynamics are lost by this assumption, and as to whether it might be more appropriate to instead model each cell individually. We show that it is sufficient ...
